WHAT YOU'LL LEARN:
LIGHTING IN TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHY

Use Backlighting for Drama

Learning backlight lighting techniques during our tour  can transform your travel photography. The golden hour, just before sunset, provides stunning opportunities to capture silhouettes against vibrant landscapes.

Experimenting with the sun positioned behind your subject creates a magical glow, enhancing the mood of your images. Pay attention to the natural elements, such as the intricate architecture and sweeping dunes, which can add depth to your shots.

This Duomo in Orvieto, Italy was sublime in the backlight of sunset.

Be Mindful of Midday Light

Midday sunlight is often harsh and unflattering, leading to blown-out highlights and deep shadows.

If we're shooting during this time, it's great to look for shaded areas, use diffusers, or focus on subjects where contrast can add drama, such as architectural details or high-contrast landscapes.

Travel photography, on-the-fly, can often be about making the most of the lighting at a location at any time of the day. Oftentimes we will not be re-visiting a location while travelling so we like to make the most of the time and design our shots based on the ambient light in that moment.

This marketplace held the perfect shading from the midday sun and an opportunity to capture the dappled light under trees.

Embrace Artificial Lighting at Night

Light photography is all about harnessing the natural elements around you to create stunning images.

Explore different angles and perspectives to capture the beauty of your surroundings in unique way.

The key is to be aware of how light interacts with your subject and the landscape, making adjustments as necessary for the best results.

This busy roadside scene in Bangkok makes use of the light in the stall to concentrate our attention on the subject. It tells the story of that busy Bangkok but then the everyday act of buying food on the side of the road and blocking all else out.
