EXPOSURE TO ITS BEST ADVANTAGE IN TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHY

Travel photography is as much about capturing the spirit of a place as it is about the technical elements that make your photos stand out.

On our travel tour to Morocco, the dynamic interplay of light and shadow provides the perfect playground for honing your photography skills—especially when it comes to mastering exposure.

Each new scene and location offers unique challenges and opportunities for controlling light by using exposure.  Angela looks forward to showing you the best tips for achieving storytelling exposures.

Rosann, on the other hand, will be looking after our needs in our locations and making sure we have enough time in each place so that we can all achieve a great image.

The Big Three: Shutter Speed, Aperture, and ISO

First things first: exposure is all about managing light, and there are three settings you’ll use to do that. On our tour, we’ll help you get comfy with these:

  1. Shutter Speed: This is how long your camera lets light in. A fast shutter freezes action (like a camel’s step in the desert), while a slower shutter creates dreamy motion blur (think the flowing fabric of a Berber scarf in the wind).

  2. Aperture: This controls how much light enters through your lens. A wide aperture (low f-number) creates soft, blurry backgrounds—perfect for highlighting the intricate details of Moroccan pottery or jewellery. A smaller aperture (high f-number) is great for sharp landscapes, like the rolling dunes of the Sahara.

  3. ISO: This adjusts your camera’s sensitivity to light. Low ISO (100–200) is great for bright daytime shots, while higher ISO (800+) helps in dim conditions, like the soft glow of lanterns in a Marrakech market.

We’ll show you how these three settings work together so you can confidently shoot in any situation.

Tackling the Bustling Souks

The markets of Morocco are a sensory overload in the best way possible—bright colours, dynamic movement, and ever-changing light. We’ll teach you how to:

  • Use spot metering to expose for your subject, even in tricky lighting.

  • Freeze action with faster shutter speeds as merchants hustle and customers haggle.

  • Play with aperture to create artistic depth, isolating vibrant spices against a busy backdrop.

Breaking (and Bending) the Rules

Once you know the basics, we’ll encourage you to break the “rules” and get creative. Want to try intentional motion blur for an abstract shot? We’ll show you how.

Interested in experimenting with silhouettes? Let’s play with backlighting.

Morocco is a place that inspires artistic expression, and there’s no better way to learn than by experimenting with your settings in real-time.
