What to expect from a commercial photography shoot in Dunedin with me.

Booking a commercial photography shoot can feel like a big step, especially if you’re not used to being in front of the camera or organising professional imagery for your business. The good news is that the whole process should feel far more relaxed and collaborative than you might imagine.

For me, a commercial shoot always starts with understanding what the images actually need to do for your business. Are they for your website? Social media? Advertising? PR? A new product launch? Or perhaps you simply need a strong library of professional images you can draw from throughout the year. Knowing where the photographs will be used helps shape everything from locations and lighting through to styling, compositions and the types of images we create.

Before the Shoot

We’ll talk through what you need, the feel you’re after and how you want your business to be represented. This is also where we can discuss locations, clothing, products, staff, interiors and any particular shots that are important to you.

You definitely don’t need to arrive with a perfectly formed creative brief. Part of my job is helping you work out what will photograph well and what combination of images will give you the most useful collection.

If we’re photographing your team, your workplace or people actually doing what they do, I’ll also think about how we can keep things feeling natural rather than overly staged.

On the Day

Commercial photography doesn’t have to mean lots of stiff posing and awkward smiling at the camera.

I tend to keep things relaxed and keep the shoot moving. I’ll guide people when they need it, suggest where to stand, what to do with their hands and make small adjustments that help everything look polished without losing personality.

There’s usually a mixture of planned shots and spontaneous ones. Sometimes the photographs we hadn’t specifically planned are the ones that bring the whole collection to life.

We might photograph wide environmental images, close-up details, people working, interactions between staff, products, interiors and some more polished hero images for your website or advertising.

You Don’t Have to Be Comfortable in Front of the Camera

This is probably one of the things I hear most often from clients.

Most people aren’t professional models, and I certainly don’t expect them to be. My job is to create an environment where you can settle into the shoot and forget about the camera a little.

I’ll give you plenty of direction without making you feel overly posed. Usually, once we’ve been photographing for a short while, people realise it’s nowhere near as intimidating as they expected.

Making the Most of Your Location

One of the advantages of commercial photography in Dunedin is the huge variety of locations we have available.

We can photograph inside your workplace, around the city, in an industrial environment, among Dunedin’s beautiful heritage architecture or outdoors if that suits your brand.

Sometimes your own workplace is the perfect backdrop because it immediately gives people a sense of who you are and what you do. Other businesses benefit from something a little more editorial or location-based.

The location should support your story rather than compete with it.

Creating More Than One Good Photo

A commercial shoot shouldn’t leave you with one lovely photograph and nothing else to use.

I’m always thinking about variety.

That might mean creating horizontal images for website banners, vertical photographs for social media, images with space for text, tighter portraits, wider environmental photographs and small details that can be used between your main marketing images.

The goal is to give you a versatile collection that works across your website, social media, advertising, newsletters and future marketing.

After Your Commercial Photography Shoot

Once the shoot is finished, I’ll carefully select and edit your photographs so the final collection feels cohesive and polished.

You’ll receive professional images that still feel like your business rather than generic stock photography.

And that’s really what good commercial photography should do. It should help potential clients quickly understand who you are, what you offer and what it might feel like to work with you.

If your current imagery no longer reflects where your business is heading, a commercial photography shoot can be a great opportunity to refresh how you show up.

Whether you need photographs of your people, your space, your products or the work happening behind the scenes, we can create a collection that feels natural, professional and unmistakably yours.
