Professional Headshots vs Personal Branding Photography | Dunedin

What's the Difference?

If you've been thinking about updating your professional photographs, you might have come across the terms professional headshots and personal branding photography. They sound quite similar, and while there's definitely some crossover, they're actually two quite different approaches to photographing you and your business.

So, which one do you need?

Well, that really depends on what you want your photographs to do, where you're going to use them and how much of your personality and business you want to bring into the picture.

As a professional photographer in Dunedin, I photograph plenty of people who simply need a great new headshot, and others who want a much wider collection of images to help tell their business story. Both have their place, and neither needs to be complicated.

Let's break it down.

What is professional headshot photography?

A professional headshot is generally a portrait that focuses on you. Your face, your expression and the impression you want to make.

It's the photograph people see when they visit your LinkedIn profile, website, company directory, email signature or professional bio.

A good headshot should communicate something about you before you've even had a chance to introduce yourself.

Perhaps you want to look confident and capable, approachable and friendly, creative and individual, or polished and professional. The little details matter.

Lighting, background, clothing, expression and the way you're positioned all contribute to the final image.

For some people, a simple, beautifully lit studio portrait is exactly what's needed. For others, a more relaxed environmental portrait, photographed in their workplace or somewhere that reflects their profession, feels much more appropriate.

The aim isn't to make you look like somebody else or squeeze you into a standard corporate mould. It's to create a photograph that represents you at your best, while still looking like you.

And yes, that includes those of you who tell me you absolutely hate having your photograph taken. You're in very good company!

What is personal branding photography?

Personal branding photography takes things a little further.

Rather than concentrating on one portrait, we're creating a collection of photographs that tell the story of who you are, what you do and what makes your business yours.

Think of it as giving people a little glimpse behind the business name.

Your personality, your working environment, the things you create, the way you interact with clients and even the little details that make your business unique can all become part of the story.

A personal branding photography session might include:

  • A selection of professional portraits with different expressions and poses.

  • Relaxed lifestyle images that show more of your personality.

  • Photographs of you working or interacting with clients.

  • Images of your products, tools or workspace.

  • Details that help communicate your brand's personality.

  • A variety of horizontal and vertical photographs for websites, social media and marketing.

The idea is to create a versatile collection of images that you can use throughout your business, rather than relying on the same headshot every time you need a photograph.

For a small business owner, consultant, creative professional or entrepreneur, this can be incredibly useful.

People aren't just buying a product or service. They're often choosing the person behind it, too.

Your photographs help them get a feel for who you are and what it might be like to work with you.

So, what's the actual difference?

The easiest way to think about it is this:

A professional headshot introduces you.

Personal branding photography tells people a little more about you.

Both are about creating a professional image, but they serve slightly different purposes.

Professional headshots are ideal if you:

  • Need an updated LinkedIn profile photograph.

  • Want a professional image for your website or company profile.

  • Need a photograph for speaking engagements, publications or media features.

  • Are part of a team that needs consistent corporate headshots.

  • Simply want a beautiful, current portrait that represents you professionally.

Personal branding photography is ideal if you:

  • Own or run your own business.

  • Want to build a stronger connection with potential clients.

  • Need a variety of images for your website and social media.

  • Want to show people what you do, not just what you look like.

  • Are developing your business identity and want your photographs to reflect it.

  • Regularly create marketing content and need images that can be used in different ways.

Of course, there's no rule saying you have to choose one or the other. Sometimes a personal branding session includes a collection of strong professional headshots as well as all the other images your business needs.

That's actually one of my favourite ways to approach it.

Why your photographs matter more than you might think

We live in a world where people often meet you online long before they meet you in person.

They visit your website, scroll through your social media, read your LinkedIn profile or come across your business while searching for a particular service.

Your photographs are doing a lot of the introducing.

Think about the difference between visiting a website filled with generic stock photographs and one featuring the actual people behind the business.

One gives you a general impression. The other gives you something to connect with.

There's something reassuring about seeing the person you're considering working with. It helps build familiarity and trust, and it gives potential clients a sense of your personality.

This is particularly important for small businesses and independent professionals, where so much of the relationship comes down to the person providing the service.

Your photographs don't need to be overly polished, corporate or serious to look professional.

In fact, sometimes the most effective images are the ones that feel relaxed, genuine and full of personality.

Professional doesn't have to mean formal.

How do you want people to see you?

This is one of the first things I like to talk about when planning a headshot or personal branding session.

Not just what photographs you need, but how you want people to feel when they see them.

Do you want to appear confident and authoritative? Warm and approachable? Creative and a little unconventional? Calm, considered and professional?

Perhaps you're a business owner who wants to look polished without losing that relaxed, down-to-earth personality that your clients know and love.

Or maybe you're stepping into a new role, launching a business or refreshing your professional identity and want your photographs to reflect where you are now.

There isn't a right or wrong answer.

Your photographs should reflect your personality, your work and the audience you're hoping to connect with.

That's why I don't believe in using exactly the same lighting, background and posing for every person who steps in front of my camera.

Different people, different businesses and different personalities call for different approaches.

What happens during a headshot or personal branding session with me?

First, we have a chat.

I'd like to know a little about you, what you do, what you're looking for and where you plan to use your photographs.

You don't need to arrive with a perfectly formed vision or know exactly what you want. That's something we can work through together.

For a professional headshot session, we might keep things relatively simple, concentrating on creating a selection of polished portraits with different expressions, angles and backgrounds.

For personal branding photography, we'll spend a little more time exploring the different ways we can represent you and your business.

We might photograph you in your workspace, create some relaxed portraits, include details of what you do or introduce a little more creativity through lighting, styling and location.

I'll help you work through clothing choices, backgrounds and the overall look of your images before we get started.

And when it comes to actually being photographed? You don't need to know how to pose. That's my job.

I'll guide you through the process, make suggestions, adjust things as we go and help you feel comfortable in front of the camera.

There will probably be plenty of chatting and a few laughs along the way.

I'm also watching for those little moments when you stop thinking about the camera and simply relax into being yourself. Often, those are the photographs that become favourites.

Professional headshots and personal branding photography in Dunedin

Whether you need one fantastic new headshot or a complete collection of personal branding photographs, the most important thing is that your images feel right for you.

I work with business owners, professionals, creatives and organisations throughout Dunedin and beyond, creating professional headshots, corporate portraits and personal branding photography that feels polished, natural and individual.

My approach is relaxed and collaborative. I want you to feel comfortable, enjoy the experience and walk away with photographs you're genuinely excited to use.

Because at the end of the day, this isn't about looking like everybody else.

It's about showing people who you are, what you bring to the table and why they should want to work with you.

I'd love to help you do that.
