What styles of portrait photography are popular in Dunedin?

Portrait photography has changed a lot over the years. While there will always be a place for the beautifully posed portrait, more and more people are looking for photographs that feel natural, relaxed and genuinely like them.

That’s very much how I like to photograph people too.

Whether I’m photographing one person, a family, a business owner or someone wanting something a little more creative, my approach is pretty simple: I want you to feel comfortable, look like yourself and walk away with photographs you actually love.

So, what styles of portrait photography are people drawn to in Dunedin?

Natural and Relaxed Portrait Photography

This is probably the style I’m asked for most often.

People want beautiful photographs, but they don’t necessarily want to look as though they’ve been heavily posed into position. They want something polished while still feeling natural.

That doesn’t mean I simply leave you standing there wondering what to do.

I’ll guide you with posing, movement and little adjustments throughout the shoot, but I try to keep everything flowing rather than making you hold an uncomfortable pose for ages.

A lot of people tell me at the beginning of their session that they hate having their photo taken. Usually, it doesn’t take long before they realise the experience is much easier than they imagined.

Environmental Portraits

Dunedin gives us some pretty amazing backdrops for portrait photography.

Beaches, dramatic coastline, heritage buildings, interesting city streets, gardens and beautiful pockets of natural light all lend themselves to environmental portraits.

Rather than photographing you against a plain background, environmental portraits place you within a location that adds something to the photograph.

It might be a family wandering along the beach, a business owner photographed in their workplace or a creative portrait using architecture and surroundings as part of the composition.

The location helps tell more of the story.

Personal Branding Portraits

Personal branding photography has become a huge part of how people present themselves professionally.

For business owners, creatives, entrepreneurs and professionals, a headshot is often only the beginning.

A branding session can include portraits, working images, details, lifestyle photographs and environmental shots that show a little more personality.

I like branding photography to feel polished without becoming overly corporate. We can create the strong, confident images you need for LinkedIn or your website while also capturing some more relaxed photographs for social media, articles and marketing.

The aim is to give you variety rather than twenty versions of essentially the same headshot.

Editorial-Style Portrait Photography

Editorial portraits sit somewhere between traditional portraiture and fashion photography.

They tend to be a little more considered in their styling, lighting and composition and can have a stronger visual mood.

This is a style I particularly love.

We might play with beautiful light, movement, wardrobe, interesting locations or stronger posing to create something that feels elevated without losing the person underneath it all.

You don’t need to be a model to have an editorial-style portrait session either. I’ll talk you through everything as we go and help create the shape, expression and movement that works for you.

Family and Children’s Portraits

For families, the shift is definitely towards photography that feels less rigid and more connected.

Of course, I’ll always make sure we capture those photographs where everyone is together and looking wonderful. But some of my favourite images usually happen in between.

Someone laughs. A child grabs Mum around the neck. Dad makes one of the kids giggle. Someone goes rogue.

Those little moments are often where the personality of a family really comes through.

I like family sessions to have enough direction that nobody feels awkward, while leaving plenty of room for real interaction.

Creative and Avant-Garde Portraits

Then there are the portraits that are less about simply recording what someone looks like and more about creating something.

Creative portrait photography can involve unusual lighting, styling, fashion, hair, makeup, conceptual ideas or surreal elements.

This is where we can push things much further.

Sometimes the starting point is a fully formed idea. Other times it might simply be a colour, an outfit, a mood or something you’ve seen that sparks an idea.

These shoots are much more collaborative. We talk, experiment, adjust things and follow where the creative process takes us.

If you’ve ever thought, I would love to do something really different, this is probably the territory you’re looking for.

Classic Portraits Still Have Their Place

Not everything needs to be candid or wildly creative.

There’s something incredibly beautiful about a simple, well-lit portrait where the entire focus is on the person.

Good light. Clean styling. Strong composition. Great expression.

Simple portraits can be incredibly powerful, particularly for modelling portfolios, professional headshots and portraits you want to keep for a very long time.

And simple definitely doesn’t have to mean boring.

Finding the Style That Feels Like You

You don’t actually have to know what style of portrait photography you want before you contact me.

Most people don’t arrive speaking fluent photographer.

You might just know that you want something natural. Or sophisticated. Or fun. Or perhaps you’ve seen one photograph that made you think, I want something that feels like that.

That’s enough.

We can talk through what you’re drawn to, where the photographs will be used and how you’d like to feel when you look at them.
